  1. chassis pulled, ready for re-cap, cabinet stripped ready for re-finishing. replacing the paper capacitors in this set isn't going to be easy or quick. There are 26 that need to be swapped out. Most are mounted on the board in the bottom left of the under chassis view. There isn't much wiggling room there....
  2. Fresh from Kijiji is this 1934 Northern Electric Console. This is a rare Canadian built set that is waiting in line for a complete ground up rebuild and re-finish.
  3. I picked up two if these sets. Mine have the military model number of GR10. One is in excellent physical condition, the other needs a lot of work and considered a "basket case". I'm hoping to get both up and singing again. These are the older brothers to the RCA AR-88LF I posted previously
  4. This is the latest set I picked up. A 1964 23" Westinghouse console. These photos were copied from the ad. The set has the wrong legs on it LOL! The origianal legs would have only been 6 to 8 inches in length not a foot and a half I haven't done much to it yet other than to test the picture tube which has 50% of life left and should give a decent picture when completed. This was one of the first sets to use a printed circuit board instead of the point to point hard wiring of sets in the past.
  5. LOL! that's the definition of "total destruction"
  6. I scored 100% My grandfather would get up early and scoop the cream off the top of all the milk bottles LOL!
  7. finished has other meaning.. when I say a television set or radio is finished, it can mean the work has been completed (performed) or it's the end of the line for it (not worth repairing). a puzzle can be complete but far from finished. there is a middle of the road too with "it's days are numbered".
  8. just hope the turkey is made of glass instead of wood...
  9. My Favorite Animal Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken." She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken.. She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked us to tell her what famous person we admire most. I told her, "Colonel Sanders." Guess where I am now....
  10. Washington Redskins No matter which side you are on in the matter of renaming the Washington Redskins, this is funny. This guy is hilarious. Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins. Dear Mr. Page: I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward. Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns. The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk. The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives. I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres. Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates! Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children. The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children. The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children. So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves. As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers" (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???)

    Compliment me

this reminds me of my aunt and uncle one xmas years ago. My aunt asked him what he was getting her. He gave it some thought and replied "nothing, you didn't use what I bought you last year". She came back with "what did you buy that I didn't use??". He said "a burial plot!" I hit the ground laughing. She just glared at him LOL!
  15. Here is a 1931 Westinghouse Columaire Grandmother Clock Radio. This is a piece designed by an engineer named Raymond Leowy. The design reflects the building styles of the early '30s and that is also reflected in the clock hands (two of which are missing on this set so I'll have to have a set made up for it) The cabinet has been refinished and the radio section completely re-built with all new capacitors, tubes and resistors. The set is working like new again. All I have left to do is to have the clock assy cleaned and lubed as well as the hands made. This clock "ticks" just like a wind up model and has a power outtage timer that allows the owner to know the clock can be accurate to within 3 minutes of a power outtage. Should the timer count down totally the clock won't start again until the timer has been re-set assuring accuracy. There was even a "remote control" available for this set in '31. The cabinet is made of solid walnut with a poplar strip up the front inlayed with burds eye maple. More on this very rare and highly desireable piece can be found here: http://www.radio-antiks.com/IndexRadio-Antiks_Westinghouse_Columaire.htm
  16. rofl, I never knew odd did deliveries
  17. Here is a 1949 Admiral TV/Radio/Phono combo I just picked up last night. The picture tube (CRT) is dead with almost 0 emission. Luckily I have a good spare. I'll go over all the transformers in the set and should they all pass testing I'll replace the 30 or 40 paper capacitors and electrolytics. I'll also go over all the resistors and replace any that have drifted off tollerance as well as replacing the weak tubes. Then I'll swap the picture tubes and power it up. If all checks out ok then it'll get a complete alignment. I'll do the same to the radio section and turn my attention to the cabinet. https://www.kshs.org/kansapedia/cool-things-home-entertainment-system/15792
  18. This is a Scott SLRM used in the military as a "morale" radio for our military to use to listen to news and music. I picked it up from a fella who's mother had it stashed in her attic. She inherited it from her father. I gave the set a complete re-cap, replaced all the off value resistors and installed a complete set of new old stock tubes. The set is now working better than when it left the factory. I sent the fella all the photos in the restoration process along with a detailed description of the work done on the set. They are very pleased the set went to someone who appreciates it's historical significance and restoration. The model SLRM is an acronym for Scott Low Radiation Marine. They installed extensive shielding to prevent the enemy from picking up on it's oscillator using radio direction finding equipment. More on the Scott SLRM can be found here: http://www.imradioha.org/scott_labs.htm
  19. here is my favorite set. an RCA AR88LF. These were built in Montreal, Quebec for shipping to our allies during WWII. Most were shipped to the UK, some went to Russia and others to France. This set was pulled from a decomissioned airport near here. I gave the set a complete ground up tear down and re-build. Parts are getting very hard to locate for this set these days. The audio output transformer for example came from a fella in the North West Territories. I don't have a photo of it's present state but there is one included as an "after" example. This is a very sensitive radio and excellent at picking up signals from around the world. More on the RCA AR88 series receivers can be found here: http://www.radioblvd.com/ar88.htm
