  1. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern daylight savings time), Saturday the 13th of April to discuss the short story The Homecoming by Mike Resnick. Nan recommended this story which, although a science fiction one, deals with some very basic human prejudices and emotions. The story can be found at: http://www.asimovs.com/2012_06/pdfs/TheHomecoming_MikeResnick.pdf Meeting place: #Readers_Corner Webchat Users: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner IRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com -i #readers_corner6667 As usual, free virtual cookies and merlot to anyone bringing a new chatter to #Readers_Corner. See you there. Log attached: readers-corner log 04 13 2013.rtf
  2. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern daylight savings time), Saturday the 6th of April to discuss the short story The Detective Detector by O. Henry. The story is typical for O. Henry: a comic portrayal of the seedier side of New York in the early 20th century. The story can be found at: http://fullreads.com/literature/the-detective-detector/ Meeting place: #Readers_Corner Webchat Users: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner IRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com -i #readers_corner6667 As usual, free cookies and virtual merlot to anyone bringing a new chatter to #Readers_Corner. 3. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern daylight savings time), Saturday the 30th of March to discuss the short story Decision by Frank M. Robinson. The story was written sixty years ago at the start of the cold war and will bring back memories of the "duck and cover" era to many of us. In many ways, however, the story is just as topical today and I think we will all enjoy discussing it, and its various implications. The story can be found at: http://moonlightstories.magick7.com/1/118/1967.htm Meeting place: #Readers_Corner Webchat Users: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner IRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com -i #readers_corner6667 As usual, free cookies and virtual merlot to anyone bringing a new chatter to #Readers_Corner. 4. Catching up on reading is time well spent. Hospitals are boring, reading isn't. Get out of there quickly, hospitals are bad for your health.
  5. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern daylight savings time), Saturday the 23rd of March to discuss the short story Blue by Wayne Harper. This is a contemporary story by a relatively new author that deals with time and perception of reality in an unusual way. The story seems to be a "love it or hate it" proposition according to the readers' comments posted about it on "East of the Web". I hope you enjoy it (if you are a lover) and enjoy tearing it to pieces (if you are a hater). The story can be found at: http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/Blue.shtml Meeting place: #Readers_Corner Webchat Users: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner IRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com -i #readers_corner6667 ps: Apologies to Star--I couldn't find a pink story, so you will have to settle for Blue. Log attached: Readers Corner Log Mar 23 2013.rtf
  6. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern daylight savings time), Saturday the 16th of March to discuss the short story Summer in the Air by Ray Bradbury. The story was originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1956. Bradbury is known for his SciFi stories; this story, however, is surprising change of pace from his usual subject matter. I think you will all enjoy it. The story can be found at: http://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/wp-content/uploads/satevepost/summer-in-the-air-ray-bradbury.pdf The story can also be found at http://the24hourtala.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/sound-of-summer-running.pdf Please note: The story was later published as part of a Bradbury anthology called "Dandelion Wine." In that collection the story was renamed The Sound of Summer Running. There is no difference in the stories other than the name. 7. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern standard time), Saturday the 9th of March to discuss the short story Beyond the Door by Phillip K. ****. The story could have been made into a screen play for "Twilight Zone"; Star is already dizzy with anticipation. The story can be found at: http://www.magick7.com/1/MoonlightStories/1/1800.htm Meeting place: #Readers_Corner Webchat Users: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner IRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com -i #readers_corner6667 Hope to see you all there, and please bring a friend. 9. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern standard time), Saturday the 2nd of March to discuss the short story Some Words With a Mummy by Edgar Poe. Koach should enjoy this unusually droll commentary by his favorite master of the macabre. 12. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern standard time), Saturday the 23rd of February to discuss the short story A Filbert is a Nut by Rick Raphael. The story originally appeared in Astounding Science Fiction, November 1959. The story is more of a fantasy and it has withstood the passage of time very well. The story can be found at: http://www.magick7.c.../2/021/2049.htm Meeting place: #Readers_Corner Webchat Users:http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner IRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com -i #readers_corner6667 Bonus chat points and a glass of virtual Berkasteler Reisling to anyone bringing a new visitor to the chat. 13. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern standard time), Saturday the 16th of February to discuss the short story The Butler Did It by Lisa Westerfield. This is the second week in a row for a Westerfield story (the February 9 chat was so well attended and the story so well received that it seemed appropriate to double down, so to speak). The story is another humorous one, this one with a bit of a twist. The story can be found at: http://www.gather.co...281474979298924 Meeting place: #Readers_Corner Webchat Users: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner IRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com -i #readers_corner6667 Bonus chat points and some virtual chocolate chip cookies to anyone bringing a new visitor to the chat. Stormy will be officially tasked with advertising the story, which has makes frequent mention of the food network, in #RecipeZaar. Hope to see you all there. Log attached: Log 2012-02-16.rtf
  14. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern standard time), Saturday the 9th of February to discuss the short story George Washington is a **** by Lisa Westerfield. Don't let the title turn you off, the story is a little bit strange, a little bit entertaining, and a little bit of a serious comment on parental responsibilities and love. ((Wow ! All that in a story that also vaguely fits into the president's day theme.)) The story can be found at: http://www.gather.co...281474977596506 Meeting place: #Readers_Corner Webchat Users: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner IRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com -i #readers_corner 6667 I hope to see you all at the chat, and as always, please bring a friend. 15. Please join us at 8:30 pm (eastern standard time), Saturday the 2nd of February to discuss the short story Murder at Ford's Theater by Bob Conroy. The story poses the question, what if Lincoln had not died by an assassins bullet. I think you will enjoy it. The story can be found at: http://www.baenebook...37786.htm?blurb The link will take you to a web page "Free Stories 2011"; click the word "next" at the top right of the web page, then click on the link to Murder at Ford's Theater. 16. That would probably work pretty well.
  17. Thanks for passing the word, Koach. Many of us have been attempting to confirm or deny our fears for some time now. We all miss him.
  18. There are laws in 43 of the 48 contiguous states regarding abuse of the pun. Unfortunately, Colorado is not one of those.

  24. Please join us at 8:30 PM (eastern standard time) on Saturday, January 5, 2013 for a discussion of the short story "Sleight of Wit" by Gordon R. Dickson. The story is available from: http://www.baenebook...743471741.htm Please note: the web site contains an introduction and the first three chapters (short stories) of an anthology. "Sleight of Wit" is the second story of the three. The link takes you to the introduction page.
