  1. I didn't know they had blondes in Australia.
  2. Unfortunately there is too much truth in that story to be rofl funny. But I did enjoy it.
  3. Star: The guy was drunk and thought that the swing was his car. Anyone else, lets give the guy a good hard push off the swing. LoL
  4. Please join us at 8:30 PM, Eastern Daylight Savings Time on Saturday, October 13, to discuss the short story "The Luck of Roaring Camp" by Bret Harte. We have encountered Bret Harte in the past and have found him entertaining. This is one of his more well known stories and should provide plenty of food for thought (or is that grist for our intellectual mills). The story may be found at: http://www.readbooko...eadOnLine/1102/ Log of Chat: Readers_Corner Log 10132012.rtf
  5. Please join us at 8:30 PM, edst on Saturday, October 6, to discuss the short story "The Happiness Machine" by Ray Bradbury. The Story wasThe late Ray Bradbury is one of the most well known and respected Science Fiction authors of the mid-20th century. This story was originally published in 1957 in a Bradbury anthology Dandelion Wine. It was reprinted in the Saturday Evening Post in honor of Bradbury's 90th birthday. I know that Star will enjoy it, and I think we all will. The story may be found at: http://www.saturdaye...machine-SEP.pdf Log of chat attached: Readers_Corner Log 10062012.rtf
  6. Please join us at 8:30 PM (edt), Saturday, September 29, 2012 for a discussion of two very short stories, The Snake by Stephen Crane and Detected by the Camera by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Crane and Montgomery were contemporaries, and both were accomplished writers of both novels and short stories. These stories are quite different in their approach, and in my opinion, show the differences between a male approach to a situation and a female approach. While the situations in the stories are somewhat different, they both deal with a snake in the grass. I think it will be interesting to look at them together and see whether there is a gender related difference in approach by the authors and our opinions as readers. Gone Fishing

Four married guys go fishing. After an hour, the following conversation took place: First guy: 'You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out fishing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I would paint every room in the house next weekend.' Second guy: 'That is nothing, I had to promise my wife that I would build her a new deck for the pool.' Third guy: 'Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I would remodel the kitchen for her.' They continue to fish. When they realized that the fourth guy has not said a word, they asked him. 'You haven't said anything about what you had to do to be able to come fishing this weekend. What's the deal?' Fourth guy: 'I just set my alarm for 5:30 am. When it went off, I shut off my alarm, gave the wife a slap on her butt and said: 'Fishing or Sex?' and she said: 'Wear sun-block.'
  12. Please join us at 8:30 PM (edt), Saturday, September 8, 2012 for a discussion of Cathedral by Raymond Carver. Koach suggested this story, which has been an assigned term paper project for many English students since its initial publication in 1981. It's an interesting change of pace and I think you will enjoy both the story and our discussion of it. 16. I just finished reading Death Match by Lincoln Child (I read it in a paperback version provided on the honor system book exchange racks at the local library). Lincoln Child is better known as a collaborator with Douglas Preston on a number of occult or at least weird mystery type stories. This story is also a detective story of sorts which investigates the theoretical capabilities and dangers of Artificial Intelligence in a distributed network mode. (Star will like it and I am sure that Fovea will really love it.) If you get a chance pick it up for a few entertaining hours of reading. (I read it on a six hour plane ride so it's not too long).
  17. Star brought this to my attention. "Seeing Things" by JOHN BURROUGHS is an interesting essay on the power of observation and the value of close observation of nature. While it is not a "Short Story" as such, it is well worth reading. http://www.loa.org/images/pdf/Burroughs_Seeing_Things.pdf
  18. Sure, blame it on the seagull. lol

    Target

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Target. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse. Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Target: Dear Mrs Smiley, Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Harris, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras: 1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking. 2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in House wares to go off at 5-minute intervals. 3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom. 4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. We don't have a Code 3. 5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway. 6. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area. 7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged. 8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called. 9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. 10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. 11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the 'Mission Impossible' theme. 12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' using different sizes of funnels. 13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK ME!' 14. October 22: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!' 15. Took a box of condoms to the checkout clerk and asked where is the fitting room? And last, but not least: 16. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, and then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here..' One of the clerks passed out.
