  1. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EST) on November 8th, 2014 (0130 November 9th (GMT)), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story Footsteps in the Sand by Thea Adams. (Note for folks in exotic time zones: USA daylight savings time ended this morning at 2 a.m.) I have been searching for a story that stands at least a small chance of pleasing Nan...who claims that she enjoys a nice mystery story. After what seemed like long minutes of painstaking googling I have found a nice, non-violent mystery written by an Australian (obviating any need for Nan to dig out her Australian/English dictionary. The story might even prove enjoyable to our non-Australian chatters. Seriously, I think we will all enjoy the story. The story is available on line at: http://auslit.net/2013/06/29/footsteps-in-the-sand-by-thea-adams-short-story/ Meeting Place: Webchat: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner mIRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com:6667 -j #readers_corner 6667 I will bring virtual brownies (safe from Koach because my wife adds nuts to the batter). Hope to see you all there. Log Attached: readers log 11-08-2014.txt
  2. Happy Birthday if you see this. Don't be a stranger.
  3. We will skip postpone next week's normal chat until November 1, 2014. The postponement is due to two factors: the unavailablility of some of our regulars on the normal chat night and the choice of a lengthy (97 page) story as the subject for that chat. With that in mind, please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on November 1, 2014 (0030 November 2d (GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the story: Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes. The short story, written in 1958 and first published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction won the Hugo Award for the Best Short Story in 1960. The story was expanded into a novel in 1966 and was the joint winner of that year's Nebula Award for Best Novel.. The story proved the basis for the movie "Charlie" which won the 1968 Oscar for Actor Cliff Robertson. The story is available on line at several sites as a downloadable pdf file, a kindle and e-reader file, or just plain good, old text format. I would recommend these sites: https://ia801904.us.archive.org/7/items/FlowersForAlgernon/Flowers%20for%20Algernon.pdf adobe pdf format http://www.epubbud.com/book.php?g=BF5DMN35 epub and browser. http://archive.org/stream/FlowersForAlgernon/Flowers%20for%20Algernon_djvu.txt good, old, plain text Meeting Place: Webchat: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner mIRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com:6667 -j #readers_corner 6667 Please bring a friend. 4. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on October 18th, 2014 (0030 October 19th (GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story Occupation by Charlie Taylor. It's an interesting story that I believe will make for a spirited chat. This is a recently published fantasy, with a twist. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. 6. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on October 4th, 2014 (0030 October 5th (GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story The Man Who Saw the Future by Edmund Hamilton. This is a classic story from the golden age of Science Fiction. Hamilton was one of the masters of the genre', and this is an excellent example of his work. The story was first published in the October 1930 issue of Amazing Stories. Unlike many of the stories from the early pulp magazines, many of which dealt with "bug eyed monsters", this tale survives the test of time. It has been republished in magazines and anthologies. By the way, the story was recommended by Dash. I hope you all enjoy it as much as he and I do. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did. The story is available on line at: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/28062/28062-h/28062-h.htm or at http://www.readbookonline.net/readOnLine/63683/ Meeting Place: Webchat: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner mIRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com:6667 -j #readers_corner 6667 I hope to see you all there. 7. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on September 27th, 2014 (0030 September 28th (GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story A Tiny Feast by Chris Adrian. This contemporary story is a fantasy; indeed, it is a fairy tale dealing with parental love and emotions. It is a powerful story, and I am sure you will appreciate it. The story was published in the April 20, 2009 issue of The New Yorker. and is the first of Adrian's works which I have encountered. He has been selected by The New Yorker as one of its "20 under 40" writers. He was born in Washington, D.C. and now lives in San Francisco. He is a Fellow in pediatric hematology-oncology with UCSF. There is a wealth of information on his educational and writing background on line. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did. The story is available on line at: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2009/04/20/a-tiny-feast Meeting Place: Webchat: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner mIRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com:6667 -j #readers_corner 6667 I hope to see you all there. 8. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on September 20th, 2014 (0030 September 21st (GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story Pvt. Parker, Missing In Action by D. K. Latta. Like last week's story this is a contemporary one. It's an unusual kind of ghost story; one that is more thought provoking than scary. This story is my first encounter with the author. The Huffington Post (on line edition, dtd: Sep 14, 2014) offers this brief description of his literary career: " When not trying to earn a real living, D.K. Latta occasionally writes SF and fantasy stories, and has written pop culture opinions on everything from comic books to radio drama. But long ago he adopted as his primary hobby Canadian film & television with his website: The great Canadian Guide to Movies (& TV) at: http://www.pulpanddagger.com/movies/filmtv.html ) -- making him either nobly patriotic or just plain nuts." I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did. 10. Through Nan's good graces we have secured John Barlow's agreement to attend our discussion of his story Crocodile. It's an opportunity that we don't get very often. Let's give him a warm welcome.
  11. Thank you. I had nice day, and probably gained ten pounds.
  12. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on September 6th, 2014 (0030 August 24th (GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story Crocodile by John Barlow. The story is a contemporary, not yet published work, used by permission of the author. John Barlow is an acquaintance of our very own Nan, and she talked him into providing this humorous Australian tale for our edification and discussion. The story is not available on line, so members of our Readers_Corner group have a unique opportunity to read it before actual publication. Thanks to Nan, the author has provided us with a .pdf, attached below, which you can open and read (or print out) with adobe acrobat. As I told Nan when she gave me the story, anything involving Aussies and Crocodiles has to be an interesting/entertaining tale. If you don't like the story, blame Nan. The story is contemporary, published recently in the Saturday Evening Post. It's a humorous story that I think everyone will enjoy. It's available on line at: Strange Horizons. It's available on line at: http://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/2014/04/04/art-entertainment/fiction-uniformity.html While this is a baseball tale....I think that even our Australian readers will get the point of the story. 14. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on August 16th, 2014 (0030 August 17th (GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story The Air We Breathe is Stormy, Stormy by Rich Larson. The story is a recent one published on line at Strange Horizons. It's available on line at: http://www.strangehorizons.com/2014/20140811/stormy-f.shtml Like the story Driftwood that we discussed in mid-July, this story is about a changeling sea creature: it is, however, more in line with the Celtic legends of the selkies. I hope you enjoy it, I am sure we will enjoy discussing it. 15. Please note: Real world commitments force postponement of our normal #readers_corner chat on August 2nd. We will resume on August 9th. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on August 9th, 2014 (0030 August 10th (GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story Pea Green Boat by William R. Burkett, Jr. The story appeared in the Saturday Evening Post (March 2010) . It's available on line at: http://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/2010/03/01/post-fiction/classic-fiction/pea-green-boat-william-burkett.html When I was young my mother used to sing a nonsense song about the Owl and the Pussycat who sailed the sea in a beautiful pea green boat. The title of this story grabbed my attention and brought back fond memories of childhood; the short story, however, is not about an owl or a pussycat, nor is it a nonsense song. I think we will have lots of fun discussing it. The story is an amusing one, in some ways similar to the plots of a Chevy Chase movie. I think we will have some fun discussing it. The story is a simple one, but one that is difficult to categorize. I think you will enjoy it. After reading the story you might want to do a little research on the gaelic legends of the selkie. The story is available at: http://carvezine.com/2014-spring-thomas/ Meeting Place: Webchat: http://koach.com/cha...=readers_corner mIRC Users: /server -m chat3.koach.com:6667 -j #readers_corner 6667 I hope to see you all there. 19. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on July 12th, 2014 (0030 July 13th--GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story Danger Human by Gordon R. Dickson. Dickson is one of my favorite authors. The story is Science Fiction in the original style of the genre, but in this case, as with all of Dickson's tales, the plot is more important than the science. I think you will enjoy the story and I am certain it will make an interesting topic for our next chat. The story is available at: http://www.baenebooks.com/chapters/0743471741/0743471741.htm Please Note: The above link takes you to the introduction to the anthology, The Human Edge.
