Drake is a well known, contemporary, SciFi and Fantasy writer, who often dips into the macabre. This story was his first that was accepted for publication. It is not your typical SciFi tale. It was written after his return from serving an army tour in Vietnam, and it captures some of the horror that the war held for those who served there.
