  1. Please join us at 8:30 P.M. (EDST) on July 5th, 2014 (0030 July 6th--GMT), in #readers_corner, for a discussion of the short story Girl and Giraffe by Lydia Millet.  The story is an interesting examination of the relationship between human beings and their animal friends.  I think you will enjoy the story and I am certain you will enjoy discussing it.

Because of our recent server problems which have impaired our ability to communicate both on these forums and through e-mail, we will have had to skip our normally scheduled Readers_Corner chats for the past two weeks.  We can all recover from readers' withdrawal on Saturday, the 5th of July, and I hope to see you all there.

  2. Please join us on Saturday evening, June 14th in #Readers_Corner at 8:30 P.M. EDST (GMT - 4 hours) for a discussion of the short story Flower Box  by A.J. Aronstein.  It's an interesting psychological study of a man recovering from a mental breakdown; and I am sure that Dash will be gratified that the neighborhood descriptions in the story would seem to be symbolic of the man's mental state and its development through the story.

I found it particularly gratifying...one of my personal pet peeves is that authors often fail to do their homework and attempt to describe locations of which they have limited or no knowledge.  This story, however, is set in the greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area, and it is absolutely accurate in its descriptions of neighborhoods mentioned in the story as well as of the best ways to get from one to another of them.  I have been able to pinpoint the protagonist's home on google earth "street level" and I worked for ten years withing a few city blocks of the high-rise apartments described later in the story.  (map references will be provided to any interested parties during the chat.)

  3. Please join us on Saturday evening, June 7th in #Readers_Corner at 8:30 P.M. EDST (GMT - 4 hours) for a discussion of the short story One Ninety-One by Leigh Raper.  It's a fun read. The story is a true life tale, with very little fictional embelishment .

  4. Please join us on Saturday evening, May 24th in #Readers_Corner at 8:30 P.M. EDST(GMT - 4 hours) for a discussion of the short story An Indecent Proposal by Barry Rachin.  It's a love story of sorts, from the man's point of view, but I think that the ladies will enjoy it as much as our male chatters.

The story is available at:   http://www.bookrix.com/_ebook-barry-rachin-an-indecent-proposal/   You can read it on line, or download it from that site.

  5. Please join us at 8:30 p.m. (eastern daylight savings time) on Saturday, May 17, 2014  (i.e. 1:30 a.m. UTM on Sunday for those in other time zones) for a discussion of the short story The Killers  by Ernest Hemingway.  It has been a while since we have discussed a story by Hemingway, and I think we will all enjoy tackling one by the master of the genre.

  6. Please join us at 8:30 p.m. (eastern daylight savings time) on Saturday, May 3, 2014  (i.e. 1:30 a.m. UTM on Sunday for those in other time zones) for a discussion of the short story One-Shot  by James Blish.  The story is fun read by a well known, popular, and respected author.  For a change, any hidden meanings in the story are pretty obvious.

I am sure you will enjoy this story as much as I did.  I am also certain it will make for an entertaining discussion.

  7. Please Note:  Our scheduled chat for April 12th was postponed/rescheduled.  We only had four members present who had actually read the story.  Several regulars were away on real world business and at least one had problems with the ISP.  We will try again on April 19th.

  8. Not to burst any bubbles but the amazing story of Ronald Opus seems to be "urban legend," at least Ask.com seems to put it in that category.  The story gives lots of details from the forensic point of view but lists no verifyable/researchable information (city/state of alleged incident, exact address, police department involved, etc.).   But it does make an interesting tale from a "detective story" type of viewpoint;  it would be a good story to discuss in #readers_corner.
