This is a fantasy, reminiscent of The Devil and Daniel Webster by Washington Irving. Robert Bloch is well known as a science fiction writer. This story was originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in September 1958, and it won the Hugo Award for best short story (in Sci-Fi/Fantasy) in 1959.
