In celebration of International Women's Day today, March 8, I salute the female role models, leaders, artists, politicians and unsung heroes. Class-oriented from way back, British families would reserve their best cutlery and dinner ware for "high class" visitors, avoiding the risk of damage or destruction from everyday use. The special items would be stored up high where they could not be accidentally grabbed and used. They were stored on the 'top shelf' which became a catch phrase for high quality items and eventually people (those who deserve top shelf stuff).
